Peter Schubert – Biography

1929 Born in Dresden. Schubert spent his childhood in Wehlen an der Elbe. Early fascination with mannerism. Painted figures in oil using the chiaroscuro technique, which he would further refine in his later artistic career. In 1943 he began an apprenticeship in administration in the Wehlen town hall and, after a fortuitous meeting with Prof. Richard Müller, who was tutor to Otto Dix and George Grosz, he decided to study painting.
1947–1949 Studied painting in the class of the landscape and portrait artist Prof. Wilhelm Rudolf at the Dresden Academy. Left Dresden in 1949 because ideological constraints were restricting his artistic development. Made contact with Prof. Willi Baumeister in Stuttgart and was immediately invited to study under him at the Academy.
1950–1952 Studied under Prof. Willi Baumeister, one of the best-known representatives of modern German abstract art.
1952–1953 Studied under Fernand Léger in Paris.
1954–1957 Further studies under Prof. Hans Uhlmann at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.
Since 1957 Working as a freelance artist. Thanks to a government grant, he was able to spend 1969 at the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris. Schubert has presented his artisic work to the public in many solo exhibitions.
In 1977 Schubert's career as a ceiling painter began with his composition in the Große Orangerie in Schloss Charlottenburg. Since then he has created well over 20 ceiling paintings and murals in Germany, Italy and Canada.
2010 At a ceremony in the Große Orangerie, State Secretary Herr André Schmitz presented Peter Schubert with the Verdienstkreuz am Bande (Cross of the Order Of merit), which had been awarded to him by the Federal President Horst Köhler.
